âH
ere, poppet, I want you to have this,â said Flo, pulling out a black-and-white photo from the album spread on her formal dining table where theyâd had dinner.
âNah, Flo, itâs yours,â said Rigsy. He sat opposite Mandy, who was flicking through another album. âKeep it.â He pushed the old duckâs hand away, but she was insistent.
âNo. Itâs Sandlot. As her new owner you should have a photo of the property, hmm.â
âItâs not mine yet.â But he had his fingers and toes crossed.
âTake it. I remember taking that photo. It was the new Kodak camera my father brought when he returned home from the war. It was so terribly heavy.â She placed the black-and-white print on the dining room table. Its image shifted with the soft glow of candles. âMy father loved to take photos. So, you take it. And donât put it on eBay either.â
âIâll treasure this one, Flo.â It was an image of three men on horseback in vintage Akubras, watching over a group of Brahman drinking from a trough. âYour father â¦â
âGrandfather, and our Aboriginal tracker. We canât say his name now heâs gone, itâs the culture. Oh, he was such a wonderful man. All of them were,â said Flo, her painted nail pointing at each person on the image.
âThis is great.â
âIâm not done yet, poppet. Iâve got boxes of homemade movies. My father loved his video camera too.â
âIâm in, but not tonight. Mandyâs got a big one tomorrow. Iâll bring over the popcorn soon and weâll make a night of it.â He liked the way the candlelight gave a soft halo to Mandyâs hair, as well as highlighting the honey in her eyes. She was beautiful. âWhat do you say, Mandy? Weâll make a date of it.â
âUm â¦â She shrugged. âIâll be at Avallon, probably.â Each word was loaded with sadness, when sheâd been so at ease, almost playful, since heâd met her after work.
To Rigsy, it sounded like Mandy didnât want to go back to Avallon.
Mandy flicked over the thick page and from the centre fold of the photo album she lifted a thick gold chain. âHey, whatâs this?â
âOh, my â¦â Flo collapsed back into her chair, clutching her throat.
âWhatâs wrong, Flo?â Rigsy asked.
âThatâs my â¦â Floâs hand trembled as she reached out to touch the chain. âMy grandfatherâs fob chain.â With her rheumatic fingers, Flo stroked the thick chunky chain. A ring clasp sat at one end with a T-bar on the other.
âIâd forgotten I had this.â With her palm open to the ceiling, she wound the chain around in her hand. With the clasp end she let it trickle down from the space between her third and fourth finger until the fob T-bar caught in her palm.
âIs that the one you used for divining?â Mandy asked.
âIt is indeed.â Flo ravelled it up and dumped it in Mandyâs hands, as if throwing out the rubbish. âItâs in terrible need of a good polish.â
âItâs okay, Flo.â Rigsy grabbed the womanâs frail hand.
Flo pasted on a smile. âSo, have we had enough to eat.
